Skin-Healthy Foods

“What you put on your plate is even more important than what you put on your skin.”

Heard it before..what we eat is what we are. Here some list of the skin food that does wonder to our skin.

  • Vitamin A-rich food -   Orange and yellow vegetables such as carrots, cod liver oil, fortified cereal, cantaloupe, whole milk, spinach, eggs are examples of vitamin A rich foods.
  • Blackberries, blueberries, strawberries and plums.  These fruits top the list of anti-oxidant-rich food, which  helps eliminate free radicals in skin cells.
  • Salmon, Walnuts, Canola Oil and flax seeds.

“Essential fatty acids are responsible for healthy cell membranes, which is not only what act as barriers to harmful things but also as the passageway for nutrients to cross in and out and for waste products to get in and out of the cell,” says Ann Yelmokas McDermott, PhD, a nutritionist at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston.

If you want to have young, beautiful, radiant skin, make sure you are putting healthy food on your plate.  For areas such as maintaining a healthy appearance, sunblocks work best, and for those who love to have a healthy tan, check the suntanning lotions available at this site where you can purchase evenraman amplifier indoor tanning lotions

Vegan’s rules to live by…

02.2.2009 | 12:33 pm | facts

*Eat for pleasure and good health, not for weight loss.

*Start the day with oats and you won’t be hungry for hours.

*Eat more  protein-rich crops and beans.

*Use a plastic squeezy bottle for olive oil and sauces - it helps you use less.

*Snack on fruit and nuts instead of chocolate and crisps.

*Eat carbs like pasta and potatoes for lunch instead of in the evening.

*Drink beer, drink less,  and drink only with the evening meal.

*If you really want something, enjoy it without guilt, then lighten up the next day.

We always have the power to live our lives, to take control and to be happy with whatever circumstances we may be in right now.  And one way of doing that is by constantly watching what we eat.  It’s so easy to take charge of your lives and,as Dr. Pistone calls it, “to take charge of our hair”.

Raw fruits, vegetables and nuts do wonders to our hair and skin but should one fails to experience that wonder in one’s hair and the follicles just stop producing ones, let Dr.Piston Hair Restoration Clinic does it job for you.

High fiber, low-fat Bean Soup

01.31.2009 | 5:01 pm | facts

If you are looking for a high fiber, low-fat and vitamin packed source of protein, what you need is just a cupful of black beans, lentils, black soya beans or red kidney beans. Phytochemicals found in beans may help prevent hardening of the arteries by reducing plaque build up and keeping blood vessels healthy.

In the chef’s kitchen, beans and lentils prove to be very versatile.  They can be made into tasty soups mixed with herbs and vegetables, salad sprinkled with lime juice or tasty dips by making a puree.

Here’s one I find that makes a healthy vegetarian soup.

Five-Bean Soup

  • 2 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 celery stalks, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 medium potato, diced
  • 1/4 cup barley
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 15-ounce can pinto beans
  • 1 15-ounce can black beans
  • 1 15-ounce can kidney beans
  • 1 15-ounce can navy beans
  • 1 15-ounce can adzuki beans (Can’t find adzuki beans? Substitute any other bean variety that strikes your fancy.)
  • 1 cup corn, fresh or frozen
  • 2 cups spaghetti sauce (or more, to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil

Heat oil and sauté garlic and onion until onion is translucent. Add celery, carrots, potato, barley, and water.

Simmer 30 minutes.

Add beans, corn, spaghetti sauce, and herbs. Simmer 5 to 10 minutes, then serve…viola!Vegetarian soup!

*It’s a healthy way to start your day with this soup, especially good for those who are on loosing weight program.

When life throws you raspberries, turn them into vinegar!

01.28.2009 | 11:54 am | facts

Fruits are finding their way to the bottles- not just as juice or wine but more are evolving into fruit-vinegars usually without any additional flavouring. Common flavors of fruit vinegar include apple, black currant, raspberry, quince, and tomato. Cherry has even also joined the list of newest varieties.

Use them as flavour boosters for anything that needs a sharp, clean lift - from a splash of balsamic on roasted butternut squash to a raspberry-vinegar glaze over poached pears with  vanilla icecream.  They shine on salads with fruits, nuts or blue cheese.  It can even be used to deglaze a pan.

A simple recipe for you to make is suggested below:

Heat store-bought white vinegar to below the boiling point, toss in a handful of raspberries, refrigerate the mix for a few weeks, then strain out the fruit and enjoy.

How do u like your garlic?

01.28.2009 | 11:28 am | facts

Thiosulfinates  is the substance that account for blood-thinning or anti-platelet qualities and this substance is commonly found in garlic and onion bulbs.  Studies show that raw garlic may prevent blood clots and results in reduced cardiovascular diseases.  However most recipes call for cooked garlic, thus reducing or possibly eliminating the production of healthful substance.  Readers Digest, recently included an article that looks into the benefits of both cooked and raw garlic. Here’s what they found:

*Baked or boiled garlic for up to three minutes retain its raw qualities.

*Crushed garlic retains some benefits when cooked for up to six minutes as crushing seems to release more of the healthful substance.

*Microwaved garlic, on the other hand, produced a neutralised anticlotting effects while lightly sauteed garlic may also keep its heart-healthy benefits.

Crushing garlic before moderate cooking can reduce the loss of its benefits but then partial loss of its antithrombotic or anti clogging effect may be compensated by increasing the amount consumed. RD suggests the next time you’re making garlicky dish, add the garlic near the end of cooking and crush it for more taste and benefit.

Cream butter and sugar in small bowl with electric mixer until light and fluffy, beat in egg.  Transfer mixture to large bowl, stir in the sifted flour and apple mixture.  Pour into prepared pan.  Bake in a moderately slow overn for a bout 1 !/4 hours (though oven varies, just check and test if already cooked before 1.25 hours).  Stand 5 minutes before turning on t wire rack to cool.
